Themes: Mobile UX, attention, service design, risk

At UX Australia 2026, I spoke about a gap in much “mobile-first” design: we design for the device, but not always for the conditions in which people use it.

People use essential mobile services while commuting, caring, waiting, switching tasks and managing competing demands. Yet many journeys still assume someone is focused, uninterrupted and able to remember exactly where they are.

Drawing on human-computer interaction research and mobile design examples, I introduced three principles for designing more resilient experiences: Clarity, Continuity and Control. The talk challenged research and product teams to test not just task completion, but what happens when attention breaks—and whether the service helps people find their way back.
